Religious Discourse

Al Hajj

In the aftermath of the 9/11 terrorist attacks on US some decision-making centers and Western media, circulated and nurtured the idea that the Islamic religious discourse, along with teachings provided in mosques and schools, played a major role in luring many young Muslim men, namely those who carried out the 9/11 attacks, into adopting false ideologies that led to spreading the so-called universal terrorism. Therefore, a campaign was launched calling to change the Islamic religious discourse.
In parallel, a large number of Muslim scholars voiced their refusal of such a change; while endorsing the possibility of renewing this discourse. They referred to the fact that clarifying the immutable set of religious rules, in the religious discourse can vary according to a specific historical era or a certain social environment. They also admitted that religion embraces variables that are open to renewal and independent reasoning, referring to calls for the renewal of the Islamic religious discourse dating back to the early 20th century.
In this series, we shed light on the attempts of reform and renewal of the Islamic religious discourse in the early years of the 20th century, the actions and reactions that occurred throughout these years, mainly in Saudi Arabia and Egypt, until we focus on the Saudi arena right after the 9/11 attacks.
This series will also show how the Islamic religious discourse turned, in some Saudi media, from a peaceful discourse into one based on excessiveness and violence. We’ll see how KSA dealt with that issue through different channels of dialogue, trying to bring both the national discourse and the Islamic religious discourse close to one another.
